Aubameyang on target as Malaga and Osasuna are held to La Liga draws

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for Deportivo A Coruna, but Malaga recovered to draw 1-1 with Deportivo at La Rosaleda, while Osasuna and Levante played out a goalless stalemate at El Sadar.

The result gave Malaga their first point of the season after they began the campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid. Deportivo A Coruna, meanwhile, were making their first La Liga appearance of the season.

Malaga began with greater purpose and Juan Cruz tested Deportivo goalkeeper Leo Roman with an early long-range effort.

The visitors gradually found their rhythm and went ahead when Aubameyang received a clever pass from Luismi Cruz. He went around Alfonso Herrero before calmly finishing into the net.

It was Aubameyang’s second goal in as many matches.

Malaga responded by increasing the pressure. Chupe and Joaquin Munoz both had efforts blocked as the home side pushed for an equaliser.

The breakthrough came in the 34th minute after Rafita was brought down in the penalty area by Lucas Noubi. Chupe took responsibility from the spot and converted confidently to level the match.

Deportivo had an opportunity to regain the lead before half-time, but Aubameyang sent his shot narrowly wide from a promising position.

Malaga continued to enjoy much of the possession after the interval and came close again when Izan Merino forced Roman into a save with an effort from the edge of the area.

Deportivo remained dangerous on the counter-attack, with Herrero producing an important stop to keep out Aubameyang’s angled attempt.

The hosts missed a major chance to complete the comeback in the 76th minute. Chupe was unmarked 12 yards from goal but headed against the crossbar when he appeared certain to score.

Malaga continued to attack in the closing stages. Substitute Haitam Abaida went close with a free-kick, while Chupe fired over from distance as neither team could find a winning goal.

The point ended Malaga’s wait for their first result of the campaign, while Deportivo began theirs with a draw.

Osasuna 0-0 Levante

Osasuna and Levante shared the points at El Sadar after neither side managed to break the deadlock.

It was Osasuna’s first match of the season, while Levante were seeking a response to their opening-game defeat by Espanyol.

Osasuna started brightly and nearly moved ahead when Jorge Herrando directed a dangerous header towards goal. Mathew Ryan reacted quickly, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

The home side controlled possession for long periods but found it difficult to create clear openings against a disciplined Levante defence.

Levante then produced the first serious threat of the match. Enzo Bardeli delivered an accurate cross towards Roger Brugue, but the Levante captain struck the crossbar with his volley.

That chance opened up the game. Before the interval, Ryan was called upon again and pushed Jon Moncayola’s curling effort away.

The Australian goalkeeper continued to play a decisive role after the restart, diving to his right to keep out a powerful header from Ante Budimir.

Budimir appeared to have finally beaten Ryan shortly before the hour mark when he rounded the goalkeeper, but his effort struck the post. Aissa Mandi then helped clear the danger.

It proved to be the key moment as Osasuna were unable to recover their earlier attacking momentum.

Neither side created a winning opportunity in the final stages, leaving Osasuna with a point from their opening game and Levante with their first point after losing to Espanyol.
