AU Chairperson congratulates nine African Nations on 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the nine African nations that have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Cape Verde, and Ivory Coast.

In a statement released on Wednesday, H.E. Youssouf praised the teams for their remarkable performances throughout the qualification campaign, describing their success as a collective triumph and a symbol of continental pride and unity.

“I warmly congratulate our nine African teams whose outstanding performances have brought pride and joy to the entire continent,” said H.E. Youssouf.

“Their success demonstrates Africa’s growing strength, skill, and unity on the global stage.”

He emphasized that the qualified nations now carry the dreams and aspirations of over a billion Africans as they prepare to represent the continent at football’s biggest event in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

“These teams carry the hopes of over a billion Africans. I wish them every success as they prepare to compete at football’s highest stage.”

Youssouf also took the opportunity to commend all African teams that participated in the qualifiers, acknowledging their passion, dedication, and sportsmanship, which continue to inspire young talents across the continent.

Furthermore, the AU Chairperson expressed appreciation to FIFA for expanding Africa’s World Cup representation from five to nine teams – a move he described as a reflection of the continent’s progress and growing global recognition.

“We appreciate FIFA for increasing Africa’s World Cup quota from five to nine teams – a decision that reflects growing confidence in African football and offers more nations the opportunity to showcase their talent and culture to the world.”

He concluded by reaffirming the power of sports, particularly football, as a tool for unity and shared identity, noting its vital role in narrating Africa’s story of resilience and excellence.

“Sport remains one of the most powerful instruments of unity and solidarity. Through football, Africa continues to tell its story of resilience, creativity, and shared aspiration for excellence.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will mark a historic milestone for the African continent, featuring a record nine teams – a testament to Africa’s rising influence on the world football stage.
