Attempting to fill the shoes of N’Golo Kanté caused my struggles last season – Moises Caicedo

Chelsea’s midfielder Moises Caicedo has opened up about the difficulties he faced during his inaugural season at the club, particularly the impact of trying to fill the void left by the legendary N’Golo Kanté.

The 23-year-old, who was acquired for a record €116 million, struggled to make a significant mark last season as both he and the team faced challenges on the pitch.

This season, however, Caicedo has transformed his performance and has become a key player for Chelsea, who are currently enjoying a successful run.

Caicedo acknowledged that his struggles were largely influenced by the expectation to fill the shoes of Kanté, whose parents are from Mali.

“Last season, I had the pressure of being the new N’Golo Kanté,” Caicedo said. “That affected me a lot, but when I put that behind me, I started to focus only on helping my team and proving that I am worth what they paid for my transfer.”

By focusing on contributing to his team rather than living in Kanté’s shadow, Caicedo has begun to demonstrate his true worth as a player, effectively justifying his hefty transfer fee.
