Anelka Denies Atletico Mineiro Agreement After Collapsed Transfer
Nicolas Anelka has denied claims he was set to join Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, following the club’s announcement that they had cancelled his transfer due to what they described as “a lack of professionalism.”
The former French international, now 35, was widely expected to sign with the Belo Horizonte club — home to Brazilian legend Ronaldinho — but failed to appear for scheduled talks earlier this week. Mineiro’s sporting director expressed frustration on Wednesday, citing Anelka’s failure to show up as the reason for pulling the plug on the proposed deal.
However, Anelka has since issued a personal response, seeking to clarify his side of the story. In a two-minute video posted to YouTube on April 8, the former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Chelsea striker rejected reports that an agreement had been made.
“Yes, I had contact with the club,” Anelka said. “But contrary to what’s been said, there was never any formal agreement for me to join Atletico Mineiro.”
The Frenchman, who has remained without a club since parting ways with West Bromwich Albion earlier this year, hinted that his next move may already be in motion.
“I already know, in principle, where I’ll be going next,” he added, without disclosing further details.
Anelka’s comments come amid ongoing speculation over his future, which has been clouded by controversy in recent months. His departure from West Brom followed a suspension related to his controversial “quenelle” gesture, which sparked widespread criticism and a five-match ban from the English FA.
Atletico Mineiro had hoped Anelka would add experience and firepower to their squad ahead of a busy domestic and continental campaign. The club’s decision to walk away from the deal marks the latest chapter in what has become a turbulent end to the striker’s career.
With the video now making rounds online, Anelka’s next destination remains a subject of intrigue — though the player himself appears certain about his path forward.
