Atletico Madrid send fresh message on Julian Alvarez future as striker resumes training

Mateo Alemany says Atletico Madrid have been “very clear and firm” over Julian Alvarez’s future, as the Argentina forward returns to training following a short illness.

Atletico’s sporting director reiterated the club’s position before their match against Sevilla, with speculation continuing around Alvarez as the transfer window approaches its close.

Asked about the prospect of a move, Alemany referred back to previous statements from the club’s board and chief executive rather than offering any further detail.

“We have been very clear and firm on this matter. The board issued a statement on the subject, and the chief executive confirmed it clearly and firmly. I refer you to that; why should I say more?” he told Movistar.

Alemany also provided an update on Alvarez’s condition, saying the forward had endured several days during which he was not feeling well but had now rejoined his team-mates in training.

“He trained yesterday, and we hope he recovers quickly and is ready for the next La Liga match,” Alemany said.

The Atletico official added that he had spoken to Alvarez during the latest training session and believed the player appeared to be in good condition. The club is now waiting for him to regain full fitness before he returns to the coaching staff’s plans in the coming period.

Alvarez’s return to training comes as questions about his future remain unresolved, with Atletico maintaining the position they have already made public: the Argentina international is to continue with the club.

Alemany’s comments came before Atletico’s visit to Sevilla, where he warned that his side faced a demanding contest at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

“These matches are always difficult. Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan is a very difficult stadium, and Sevilla have made a brilliant start to the season. There is always tension, but also confidence,” he said.

The focus on Alvarez has intensified with the transfer window nearing its deadline, but Alemany gave no indication that Atletico’s stance had changed. Instead, he pointed to the club’s existing communication and repeated that the matter had already been addressed by its senior leadership.

The forward’s recent absence had been caused by a brief period of illness rather than a transfer-related development. After returning to training, Alvarez is expected to work towards recovering his full readiness, with his availability for Atletico’s next La Liga fixture dependent on his progress.
