Atletico Madrid ready to trigger Nigeria’s Christantus Uche’s release clause amid Premier League interest

Christianus Uche absent from Nigeria debut amid personal issues

Atletico Madrid are poised to enter a transfer battle with several Premier League clubs for the signature of Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche, following a standout campaign with Getafe in La Liga.

The 22-year-old emerged as a key figure under coach José Bordalás, helping the Madrid-based side retain their top-flight status with a string of commanding performances.

Uche has been one of Getafe’s revelations this season, contributing four goals and six assists from midfield.

His dynamism, technical skill, and work rate have not only solidified his importance to the team but have also drawn the attention of clubs beyond Spain.

Reports from Africa Foot indicate that Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa have all approached Getafe to express interest in the player.

Getafe president Ángel Torres has reportedly placed a €20 million valuation on Uche, reflecting his rapid development and growing influence.

However, Atletico Madrid appear prepared to escalate their pursuit by activating the midfielder’s €25 million release clause, a move that would prevent an auction and potentially fend off competition from the Premier League.

Diego Simeone’s side are keen to reinforce their midfield options with home-based talent, and Uche’s familiarity with Spanish football, coupled with his age and versatility, makes him an attractive target.

Atletico’s intent to keep Uche in La Liga aligns with their strategy of acquiring promising domestic talents who can be integrated seamlessly into their high-intensity system.

For Getafe, the potential sale would represent a significant return on a player who has quickly risen in prominence, though losing him would be a blow to Bordalás’ plans heading into next season.
