Atletico Madrid pile more pressure on Manchester United as Bayern Munich held by Viking

Manchester United’s difficult start to the season continued as Atletico Madrid beat them 2-0 in the Champions League, while Bayern Munich surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Norwegian underdogs Viking Stavanger.

Atletico, beaten by Liverpool in their opening European match, needed less than a minute to go ahead in Madrid through Pablo Barrios. Alejandro Grimaldo later struck the woodwork with a free-kick, while Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out before half-time.

United’s task became harder when Leny Yoro was sent off, and Ademola Lookman added Atletico’s second in the 79th minute.

The result leaves Manchester United with only one win in seven matches and without a victory in five. Manager Michael Carrick is under increasing pressure, with Como their next Champions League opponents in Italy.

“Tonight (Tuesday) is a one-off game in judgement, it is the Champions League and a tough place to come. We are doing certain things OK,” Carrick told Amazon Prime.

Viking hold Bayern after dramatic comeback

Viking Stavanger looked set for a famous victory over Bayern Munich after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half. The Norwegian side, in the Champions League after winning their first Norwegian title in 34 years, scored through Gianni Stensness’ second-minute header before Peter Christiansen doubled their advantage.

Harry Kane reduced the deficit from the penalty spot early in the second half and then headed his eighth goal of the season in nine games across all competitions.

Luis Diaz completed Bayern’s turnaround, but Michael Olise was dismissed in the 74th minute. The France international received a second yellow card moments after his first booking for throwing the ball at an opponent and will miss next week’s home game against Arsenal.

Viking secured a memorable point when Herman Haugen headed an equaliser in the final minute.

Kane said Olise “will be gutted and he has to take responsibility for it. It was a mistake, and mistakes happen. He has to learn from it. It’s a shame because we have important games ahead of us.”

Arsenal, last season’s beaten finalists, defeated Lille 3-0 at Emirates Stadium. Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka scored during an eight-minute spell in the second half. During the match, Lille’s Ayase Ueda beat Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes to the ball to clear a corner.

Barcelona maintained their 100% record with a 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in Istanbul. Aleksei Batrakov put the Turkish champions in front and saw another goal disallowed, but Joao Cancelo levelled before the interval. Lamine Yamal then created goals for Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon, before substitute Karim Adeyemi completed the win.

At San Siro, Club Brugge defeated Inter 4-3, with Italy-born German striker Nicolo Tresoldi scoring a hat-trick, including a penalty. Romeo Vermant also scored for the visitors, while Lautaro Martinez twice found the net for Inter, who suffered a second successive European defeat.

Villarreal beat Napoli 3-1 after coming from behind, while RB Leipzig edged PSV Eindhoven 1-0 after Ivan Perisic missed a penalty. Sporting won 2-0 at Lens through Luis Suarez and Issa Doumbia, and Sabah beat Slavia Prague 2-0 in Baku for their first league-phase victory, secured by Kaheem Parris and Joy-Lance Mickels.

Wednesday’s matches include Paris Saint-Germain’s trip to Manchester City and Real Madrid’s visit to Roma.
