Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised Nigeria Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman for the club’s remarkable ascent over the past two years.
The 27-year-old’s form has earned him a 14th place finish in the 2024 Ballon d’Or, and is currently the favourite to win the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award.
Lookman, who joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, struggled to find his footing before making the move to Italy.
The partnership between Lookman and Atalanta has blossomed, leading to significant achievements for the club.
Since Lookman’s arrival, Atalanta has reached the Coppa Italia final, secured the UEFA Europa League title, and competed in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.
Currently, the team sits just one point behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan, showcasing their competitive edge in domestic and European competitions.
Ahead of Atalanta’s match against Roma on Monday, Gasperini emphasized Lookman’s contributions to the team’s success.
“We are in a good period of form in Italy and Europe. I’m happy with the performances and results we are getting. Winning the Europa League last season helped us grow in confidence and self-belief.
“Many new players have arrived and are improving, but it was last season’s success, driven by players like Lookman, that set the tone.”
