Atalanta manager Ivan Juric has spoken openly about the uncertain future of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, expressing understanding of the player’s position while admitting the club faces a significant challenge should he depart.
Lookman, who has been a standout performer for the Bergamo side, has not returned to training as speculation over his next move intensifies.
The forward had expressed his desire to leave the club, sparking debate within Lombardy and leaving Atalanta’s preparations for the new season clouded by uncertainty.
Speaking to L’Eco di Bergamo, Juric acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation and said he respected the honesty shown by the player. “Ademola was very fair with me, he explained what he thought.
We have to accept the situation, it’s a shame it’s come to this. We know the club is working hard, they have to find a solution,” the coach said.
Inter Milan have shown interest in signing Lookman but saw their offer turned down. Reports suggest they have since shifted their attention to Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Manu Koné. Despite the setback, Inter’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements keeps Lookman’s future under constant speculation.
For Juric, the potential departure of Lookman presents a major headache. The Nigerian’s goals and creativity have been central to Atalanta’s attacking threat, and replacing such output will not be straightforward.
“You can’t imagine the arrival of someone who scores 30 goals like Retegui,” Juric admitted. “Those in the squad have potential. Maldini, Kamaldeen Sulemana, De Ketelaere are not at Lookman’s level, but with work, they can get closer.”
Juric emphasised the importance of developing current squad members while supplementing them with reinforcements where possible.
“The important thing, in my opinion, is to find other resources. If we think we can buy two players who are up to the level of those who are leaving, we are mistaken. They will improve, I am convinced of that, but we must add more,” he explained.
The coach also highlighted the difficulties of the transfer market, particularly in securing proven attackers. Strikers remain in high demand across Europe, making recruitment complex and expensive.
Juric, however, expressed satisfaction with the arrival of Gianluca Scamacca, describing him as a key figure in his plans moving forward.
“It’s very difficult, everyone is looking for strikers,” Juric said. “I’m very happy with Scamacca for this month. I want to start bringing him in from Juventus, he’s a very important player. But with many games to go, by bringing in another player, we will be competitive on all fronts.”
Lookman’s absence has left both fans and the club uncertain about what lies ahead. While Atalanta would prefer to keep the Nigerian international, Juric’s comments suggest an acceptance that circumstances may force the club into a transition phase.
The priority, according to the coach, is ensuring the squad remains competitive even if one of their most influential performers departs.
The situation continues to evolve, with the transfer window still open and interest in Lookman remaining strong. For now, Juric and his team must balance preparation for the season with the reality that one of their star forwards may not be part of the campaign ahead.
