Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has hit back at former teammate Nemanja Matic following the Serbian midfielder’s scathing remark labelling him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history.”
The war of words between the two former Old Trafford colleagues escalated on the eve of United’s Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.
Matic, now playing for the French club, was reacting to Onana’s claim earlier this week that United are “way better” than their opponents — a comment he deemed unearned.
“When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking about,” Matic said in a stinging response during a pre-match interview.
Onana, however, responded swiftly and pointedly via social media.
Sharing a photo of himself lifting the FA Cup at Wembley following United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City last season, Cameroonian wrote: “Some can’t say the same,” in a clear jab at Matic.
The Serb failed to win a single trophy during his five-year spell at Old Trafford from 2017 to 2022.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper insisted he meant no disrespect but stood by his commitment to winning.
“I would never be disrespectful to another club,” Onana noted. “We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud.”
