Aston Villa step up interest in Al-Ahli defender Roger Ibanez

Roger Ibanez could become the latest Al-Ahli player to leave the Saudi Arabian club for the Premier League after the departure of manager Matthias Jaissle.

Ibanez has halted negotiations over a new contract with Al-Ahli after attracting interest from clubs in England’s top flight, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

The Brazilian defender’s current deal is due to expire at the end of next season. Tavolieri reported on X that talks over an extension have now been put on hold as Premier League clubs consider a move for the 27-year-old.

Aston Villa are understood to be the club showing the clearest interest. The Premier League side has already begun contact with Ibanez’s representatives, although no formal offer has been made for the defender.

The uncertainty surrounding Ibanez follows the surprise change in the Al-Ahli dugout. Jaissle resigned from his position last Thursday in order to take charge of Newcastle United next season, succeeding former manager Eddie Howe.

His decision has raised the possibility of further movement between Al-Ahli and the Premier League during the current summer transfer window, with Ibanez now attracting attention after the German coach’s exit.

Ibanez had previously been linked with clubs in England while he was playing for Italian side Roma. However, he chose to leave Roma and join Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023.

Since arriving in Saudi Arabia, he has established himself as one of the most important players in the Al-Ahli squad. His performances have contributed to the club’s success in winning the AFC Champions League Elite in two successive seasons.

He also played a significant part in Al-Ahli’s Saudi Super Cup triumph, a victory that ended the club’s nine-year wait for the trophy.

The defender’s future is now uncertain as Aston Villa assess whether to make a formal approach. For the moment, there is no confirmed bid and Ibanez remains an Al-Ahli player, but the suspension of contract talks leaves open the possibility of a move to the Premier League before the new season begins.

Al-Ahli must therefore consider whether to continue discussions over a longer-term agreement or prepare for the prospect of losing a player who has become central to the club since his arrival from Roma.

The situation also adds to the significance of Jaissle’s departure. The German manager had been due to continue at Al-Ahli, but his resignation and planned move to Newcastle United have created fresh uncertainty around the Saudi club’s squad during the summer window.
