Aston Villa launch move for Guinea star Ilaix Moriba
Aston Villa are reportedly positioning themselves for another ambitious summer move, with former Ilaix Moriba emerging as a key target in Unai Emery’s evolving squad project.
Following a season strengthened by Champions League qualification and European success under Emery, Villa are expected to operate with increased financial flexibility as they look to deepen their midfield options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The club’s recruitment strategy continues to lean toward young, technically gifted players with top-level pedigree, and Moriba fits that profile despite a turbulent early career trajectory.
From La Masia prodigy to career reset
Once regarded as one of the brightest graduates of FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Moriba broke into the first team as a teenager before a contract dispute led to his departure in 2021.
He subsequently joined RB Leipzig, but struggled to establish himself in Germany, prompting a series of loan moves across La Liga.
Spells at Valencia CF, Getafe CF and Celta Vigo helped him rebuild momentum, before sealing a permanent switch to Celta in 2025.
Last season, the 23-year-old made 36 La Liga appearances, playing a more consistent role as his development stabilised after several unsettled years.
Financial pressure opens the door
Celta’s qualification for European competition has improved their sporting outlook, but their financial situation remains constrained, placing them in a position where player sales may be unavoidable.
Reports suggest Villa are weighing up an initial offer in the region of £15 million, although Celta are believed to value the midfielder closer to £25 million following a profitable valuation shift over the past year.
Spanish financial regulations have tightened squad management across La Liga, increasing the likelihood that at least one significant departure will be required to balance the books.
Villa’s advantage and Moriba’s decision point
Villa believe their position in European competition, combined with Emery’s project stability, gives them an edge in negotiations. The club are also banking on player ambition playing a decisive role, with the lure of Champions League football seen as a key factor.
Moriba’s next step is expected to hinge on whether he prioritises continuity at Celta or a return to a higher-profile European stage in England.
