Gradel in Talks Over Saint-Étienne Contract Extension
AS Saint-Étienne forward Max-Alain Gradel may be set to extend his stay with the Ligue 1 side, amid ongoing speculation over his future.
The 26-year-old Ivorian international has reportedly opened negotiations with the club’s management to prolong his contract, which is currently due to expire in June 2015. The discussions come as a surprise to some, given that Gradel had been widely linked with a move away from the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard during the summer transfer window.
According to reports from But! Football Club, both parties are believed to be close to reaching an agreement that would not only secure Gradel’s services for a longer term but also ensure that the club is financially compensated should he move on in the near future.
Gradel, who joined Saint-Étienne from Leeds United in August 2011, has become a key player for Les Verts under manager Christophe Galtier. Known for his pace, creativity and set-piece prowess, the Ivorian was on the scoresheet at the weekend with a stunning free-kick in Saint-Étienne’s 3-1 victory over Reims on the second matchday of the Ligue 1 season.
His performance has once again underlined his importance to the team, prompting the club to accelerate contract talks in hopes of securing his immediate future.
Saint-Étienne, who are aiming to challenge for European qualification this season, are keen to retain their core group of experienced players, and Gradel fits that profile. His leadership and attacking threat, coupled with his international pedigree with Ivory Coast, make him a valuable asset.
Should a contract extension be finalised, it would also place Saint-Étienne in a stronger negotiating position should clubs come calling in future transfer windows. With his current deal set to expire next summer, the club would risk losing him on a free transfer if no agreement is reached in the coming months.
Gradel has remained tight-lipped publicly about his future, but his latest goal and continued presence in the starting lineup suggest he remains committed to the club—for now.
