Assane Diao has officially committed to representing Senegal at the international level, rejecting the possibility of playing for Spain.
The 19-year-old winger has been named in Senegal’s 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Breakthrough Season in Italy
Diao has been in impressive form since joining Serie A side Como in January 2025, scoring five goals in 10 matches.
His performances have drawn significant attention, and his decision to play for Senegal rather than Spain marks a major boost for the West African nation.
Senegalese head coach Pape Thiaw, who succeeded Aliou Cissé, spoke about Diao’s decision during a press conference, emphasizing the young player’s deep-rooted connection to the country.
“A Choice of the Heart”
Thiaw revealed that he personally met with Diao in Spain before the winger finalized his choice.
“It’s true that I went to Spain and spoke with Assane, who always showed me that his choice was a choice of the heart,” Thiaw stated.
“He always dreamed of representing Senegal. I think Senegalese blood runs through his veins, and I have confidence in that. When I talked to this kid, he was eager.”
Diao had previously represented Spain at the youth level, but his decision to switch allegiance to Senegal highlights the growing influence of the African champions in attracting dual-national talents.
Senegal’s Dual-National Strategy
Since taking charge, Thiaw has prioritized strengthening Senegal’s squad by convincing players with dual nationality to join the Lions of Teranga.
Diao’s inclusion in the World Cup qualifiers squad is the latest example of this approach, as Senegal continues to build a formidable team for the future.
With his international future now settled, Diao will be eager to make an immediate impact when Senegal resumes its qualifying campaign.
