Asamoah Gyan appointed Ghana’s director of club and player affairs

The Ghana Football Association has appointed former captain Asamoah Gyan as director of club and player affairs within the administrative set-up of the Ghana national team.

Gyan, the Black Stars’ all-time leading scorer, will help strengthen links between the national side, its players and their clubs. His responsibilities will also include supporting player welfare and improving communication with members of the squad.

The association said Ghana would benefit from Gyan’s leadership experience and his strong relationship with the current generation of players.

The former striker will act as a link between the coaching staff, players and clubs. He will help coordinate communication on player call-ups and individual circumstances, while also offering support and guidance to members of the team.

Gyan is Ghana’s record goalscorer with 51 international goals. He captained the Black Stars at several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and also represented the country at three World Cup editions.

He announced his retirement from football in 2023 at the age of 37.

Gyan began his career with Ghanaian club Liberty Professionals before moving to Italian side Udinese in 2003.

During his career in Europe, he also played for Sunderland in England and Stade Rennais in France. His clubs outside Europe included Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, Shanghai in China, Al Ahli Dubai in the UAE and Kayserispor in Turkey.

At international level, Gyan made 109 appearances for Ghana and scored 51 goals. He featured for the Black Stars at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
