Monaco Eyes Yoann Benalouane as Potential Replacement for Aymen Abdennour
By BBC Sport Africa
With Aymen Abdennour attracting intense interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs, AS Monaco are preparing for a possible defensive reshuffle — and may look to another Tunisian international to fill the void.
Abdennour, who has impressed with a string of commanding performances in Ligue 1 and European competitions, is reportedly being courted by Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and several other top-tier sides. The 25-year-old centre-back’s market value has soared following a standout season, prompting Monaco to consider capitalising on his growing reputation.
In anticipation of a potential departure, Monaco are now setting their sights on Yohan Benalouane, another Tunisian international currently plying his trade in Serie A with Atalanta. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the principality club sees Benalouane as a logical successor to Abdennour and has already made contact with his representatives, as confirmed by Foot Mercato.
Benalouane, 28, is a familiar name in French football circles, having emerged through the youth ranks at AS Saint-Étienne between 2007 and 2010. He has since carved out a solid career in Italy, featuring regularly for Atalanta in Serie A — with 27 appearances this past season.
Monaco’s Tunisian scouting network appears to be paying dividends once more, after the successful acquisition of Abdennour from Toulouse in 2014. Should a deal be finalised, Benalouane could reunite with familiar faces and bolster Monaco’s backline with his experience and Serie A pedigree.
The versatile defender is also drawing attention from Sampdoria, AS Roma, and Inter Milan, suggesting that Monaco may face stiff competition. However, with a contract running until 2019 and a market valuation around €1.5 million, Benalouane represents a financially sound option for Monaco as they look to build for the future while remaining competitive in Ligue 1 and Europe.
As the summer transfer window heats up, the club’s next move will hinge on whether they choose to cash in on Abdennour — and how swiftly they can secure a suitable replacement.
