AS Maniema Union missed a crucial chance to take control of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign after drawing 1-1 against Royal Leopards of Eswatini on Saturday at the Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa.

The Congolese side dominated the first half with confidence and attacking intent. Osée Ndombele led a determined performance as the team created several scoring opportunities but failed to find the net before halftime.

Maniema Union showed energy and control, yet their final touch in front of goal let them down.

Early in the second half, the hosts finally broke the deadlock. Titan Mbala struck in the 47th minute to give Maniema Union a well-deserved lead.

The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium as fans anticipated a home victory.

For more than twenty minutes, the Congolese side looked in command and appeared close to securing a first-leg advantage.

However, the game took a disappointing turn in the 69th minute. Royal Leopards capitalized on a lapse in concentration from Maniema Union’s defence to score the equalizer, silencing the home supporters.

The goal left the hosts frustrated after controlling much of the match. Despite several late attempts, the Congolese club could not restore their lead before the final whistle.

Coach Daouda Lupembe’s men now face an uphill battle in the return leg in Eswatini. The away goal conceded could complicate their qualification hopes, but the team remains optimistic.

Maniema Union must now focus on improving their finishing and defensive discipline if they want to progress to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The second leg, scheduled for next weekend, will decide which side advances. A win or a high-scoring draw would see Maniema Union qualify, while a defeat would end their continental journey.

The Congolese players know that their performance in Eswatini must show more precision and mental strength.

The draw may feel like a setback, but Maniema Union’s display offered positives. The team showed resilience, attacking flair, and strong ball control. With better composure in front of goal, they still have a real opportunity to advance in the competition.
