Arteta reflects on early doubts over Saka’s position

Bukayo Saka

Mikel Arteta has revealed that he initially doubted Bukayo Saka’s potential as a full-back, believing the young talent would struggle to reach his full potential in that role. However, the Arsenal manager soon recognised Saka’s true value in more attacking positions, which has since helped him become one of the Premier League’s brightest stars.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming match, Arteta reflected on his first game in charge of the club against Bournemouth five years ago, where Saka featured as a full-back.

At the time, Arteta admitted he couldn’t foresee the level of success Saka would go on to achieve.

“The day of that game? No,” Arteta confessed when asked if he had envisioned Saka becoming the key player he is today.

Arteta explained that, over time, he began to see a different side to Saka’s game. His creativity and flair were more suited to an attacking role, prompting Arteta to gradually push the 23-year-old into more offensive positions on the wing.

This decision has since paid off, with Saka emerging as one of Arsenal’s most important players, contributing significantly alongside captain Martin Ødegaard.

Five years after that 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium, Saka has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s elite players.

In Arsenal’s recent 5-2 victory over West Ham, Saka scored one goal and provided two assists, further underlining his development into a pivotal figure for both club and country.

Ahead of their next fixture against Ruben Amorim’s side at the Emirates, Arteta praised Saka’s growth, both as a player and a person.

Despite his rise to prominence, Arteta highlighted that Saka remains grounded, humble, and approachable.

His maturity on and off the pitch has played a significant role in his success, making him not only a leader for Arsenal but also a vital asset for the England national team.
