Yaya Sanogo seized the opportunity to feature in Arsenal’s last two matches, notably making an impact against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, envisions a trajectory for the Franco-Ivorian striker akin to that of Nicolas Anelka.
“When I introduced Anelka, there were doubts from everyone. ‘Why play Anelka? Why not buy a striker?’ But we won the title with him. Sanogo is incredibly ambitious and has faith in his abilities. You can see that determination in his performances. He’s ready to battle,” Wenger emphasized during a press conference on Friday.
Despite Sanogo’s promising display against Bayern, Wenger remains cautious about anointing him as the successor to Thierry Henry or Robin van Persie. “In terms of quality, he has significant expectations to meet. We’ve witnessed exceptional players emerge at this club. Will he reach that pinnacle? It’s uncertain. However, he hasn’t appeared overwhelmed in the matches he’s played,” Wenger added.
However, Wenger hints at the possibility of reinstating Olivier Giroud, potentially sidelining the under-20 world champion, for Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League encounter against Sunderland on Saturday. This decision underscores Wenger’s prudent approach to team selection and player development.
