Arsenal target Vinicius Junior as Mikel Arteta sets out vision for Real Madrid star

Arsenal are making a determined attempt to sign Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the current summer transfer window, with manager Mikel Arteta personally involved in the club’s efforts to convince the Brazil international.

Reports from England suggest there have been initial contacts between Arsenal and Real Madrid, although neither club has confirmed that discussions have taken place.

The next stage of the developing transfer story could come within hours, when Vinicius is expected to arrive in Madrid. The forward has made clear on several occasions that he wants to remain at Real Madrid, but the situation could yet change.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Arteta has taken charge of Arsenal’s approach and has spoken directly to Vinicius. The manager is understood to have explained how important the player would be to a club of Arsenal’s stature and outlined the ambition of the Premier League champions.

Arteta is also believed to have stressed that Arsenal, as they have shown over the past two seasons, are aiming to win every competition they enter. The manager presented Vinicius with the prospect of helping the club move into the highest tier of European football while playing alongside a leading figure from Real Madrid.

That message has reached Vinicius, who is already aware that Arsenal’s plans for the 2026-27 season would be built to a significant extent around him. The report suggests that his importance in that project appears less certain at Real Madrid.

The focus will now turn to what Vinicius tells Real Madrid’s hierarchy when he returns to the Spanish capital, with his arrival expected in the coming hours. His position could provide an indication of whether Arsenal’s interest has any chance of developing into a serious transfer.

The player’s representatives have denied that an agreement exists between Arsenal and Vinicius. Regardless of whether any such agreement has been reached, however, the approach taken by Arteta and his coaching staff indicates that the interest from the Premier League champions is genuine rather than simply another unsubstantiated rumour of the summer.

Vinicius has only one year remaining on his Real Madrid contract, a situation that would normally reduce a player’s transfer value. It does not necessarily mean, though, that the Spanish club would be forced to sell for a cut-price fee.

Recent transfer windows have demonstrated that Real Madrid can still demand a substantial sum in such circumstances. The club signed Eden Hazard for 100m euros despite the Belgian having only a year left on his contract at the time.

Real Madrid are also considering a move for Rodri in the current transfer window, even though the Manchester City midfielder likewise has only one year remaining on his deal. That possibility is another indication that the length of a player’s contract may not, on its own, determine the size of any potential fee.
