Arsenal have taken the unusual step of using their official website to signal that further signings are expected before the end of the current summer transfer window, a move that comes amid persistent speculation over a potential deal for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

In a statement embedded within a preview of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Girona, the club confirmed that additional arrivals are anticipated after what has so far been a frustrating window for the north London side.

Arsenal have only managed to add Greece international winger Christos Tzolis and back-up goalkeeper Illan Meslier to Mikel Arteta’s squad, with Tzolis viewed internally as a direct alternative to Leandro Trossard.

The club have already missed out on some key attacking targets. Chelsea beat them to the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while efforts to prise Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes away from St James’ Park have so far been unsuccessful.

At the same time, rumours continue to surround a possible move for Vinicius Junior, with the Real Madrid star repeatedly linked with a switch to the Emirates Stadium. Another forward on Arsenal’s radar, Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, is understood to prefer a transfer to Barcelona, further complicating the club’s attacking recruitment plans.

According to the English newspaper Metro, Arsenal’s official website published an article looking ahead to the friendly against Girona, which included a notable passage on the club’s transfer business.

The article stated: “Two new faces joined the group in pre-season – goalkeeper Illan Meslier and forward Christos Tzolis – and more are expected to sign before the transfer window shuts.”
