Abou Diaby Set to Return to Full Training After Long Injury Layoff
Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is set to return to full training this Thursday, following over a year of recovery from a serious knee injury. The French international, who suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee during training in March 2013, has been sidelined for an extended period.
Arsène Wenger confirmed the news on Tuesday evening, following Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium. The French coach expressed optimism about Diaby’s physical condition but cautioned that it would still take time before he is ready for competitive action.
“It’s very difficult to say when he will return to competition because he hasn’t played for over a year,” Wenger said. “He looks good physically, but he will need to play one or two matches before I consider him back.”
Despite the extended injury layoff, Diaby is now set to rejoin his teammates in full training, and the club hopes his return will bolster their midfield options in the final stretch of the season. However, Wenger indicated that the 28-year-old would need some time to regain full match fitness before being considered for selection.
In other team news, Arsenal’s Mesut Özil, who missed the West Ham fixture, is expected to be available for the trip to Hull City on Sunday in the Premier League’s 35th round. Wenger confirmed that the German playmaker should be fit to travel with the squad for the upcoming match.
