Former Burkina Faso international Aristide Bancé has defended Mohamed Konaté after the striker faced backlash from fans following the Stallions’ recent match against Sierra Leone.
Konaté, who started the game, came under scrutiny from supporters frustrated by his goal drought. Bancé, however, insisted the forward remains a vital part of the national team and deserves greater recognition for his overall contribution.
Speaking to Poko’O Sport, Bancé expressed strong support for the Akhmat Grozny striker. “I support Mohamed Konaté.
He always gives his all on the pitch and never cheats. He works tirelessly, even if some fans fail to see it,” Bancé said.
He described Konaté as a player whose efforts often go unnoticed by casual observers but are deeply valued by experienced footballers.
“He covers a lot of ground, contributes both defensively and offensively, and creates space for the wingers. His movements open opportunities that others benefit from,” Bancé added.
Many fans have questioned Konaté’s effectiveness due to his limited goalscoring record. Bancé, however, explained that such criticism overlooks the tactical realities of the team’s setup.
“He is often judged by how many goals he scores, but people forget how much he helps his teammates,” Bancé stated.
“His runs draw defenders away, allowing others to score. We usually play with inverted wingers who prefer cutting inside instead of crossing, so he receives fewer chances in front of goal.”
Bancé also reminded supporters of Konaté’s decisive contribution during the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Let’s not forget his goal against Algeria from Fayçal Tapsoba’s cross. That goal showed what he can do when supplied properly,” he said.
The former national team star urged fans to focus on Konaté’s work rate and selfless style rather than his goal statistics.
“He remains a valuable player who always puts the team first. He works for others, presses defenders, and contributes in every phase of play,” Bancé emphasized.
Bancé concluded with a heartfelt message of encouragement for the forward. “Courage to you, champion. You will succeed.
Keep working hard, as you always do. I believe in you,” he said.
Mohamed Konaté currently plays for Akhmat Grozny in the Russian Premier League and has been a regular figure for Burkina Faso in recent years.
While fans continue to demand more goals from him, Bancé’s words serve as a reminder of the unseen aspects of a striker’s game — the pressing, the running, and the space creation that often decide matches long before a goal is scored.
Through his passionate defense, Bancé highlighted the importance of patience and understanding among supporters.
He urged fans to rally behind Konaté rather than criticize him, insisting that confidence and support will help the striker rediscover his best form for both club and country.
