Antonio Rudiger set for new Real Madrid deal
Antonio Rudiger is reportedly close to agreeing a new one-year contract with Real Madrid, a move that would end weeks of speculation about his future at the club.
The German defender’s current deal runs out this summer, and a series of injury problems earlier in the season had raised doubts over whether he would stay at Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite those setbacks, the 33-year-old has battled back to become a key figure in Alvaro Arbeloa’s back line. Rudiger has been particularly impressive in recent Champions League outings, shining in the 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.
His form has helped restore confidence in his reliability at the highest level and convinced Madrid that his experience is still vital in a defence undergoing gradual renewal.
Rudiger is expected to start again tonight in the second leg against City, where his leadership and aggression will be crucial as Madrid look to finish the job and push on in both La Liga and the Champions League. If the extension is finalized, it will give the club short-term stability at centre-back while they plan their long-term defensive future.
