Anthony Mandrea not involved in Algeria camp despite Algiers visit
Algerian goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea has found himself at the centre of speculation after appearing in Algiers during the national team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but his presence in the country is unrelated to coach Vladimir Petković’s training camp.
Rumours began circulating after Mandrea shared images on social media from Algeria, prompting suggestions among supporters that the goalkeeper had joined the Desert Foxes squad in Sidi Moussa ahead of the tournament.
The speculation quickly gained momentum as fans attempted to link his visit to the ongoing preparations of the national team.
However, the reality appears to be much less dramatic. The SM Caen goalkeeper is indeed in Algeria, but his trip is understood to be entirely private and has no connection to the national team’s training camp, which began on 25 May as preparations continue for the World Cup.
Mandrea has been sidelined for an extended period because of a shoulder injury and was not included in Petković’s plans for the current gathering. As a result, his stay in Algeria carries no sporting significance despite the attention generated on social media.
While supporters speculated about a possible return to the squad, the coaching staff have continued working with the goalkeepers selected for the training camp at the national team’s headquarters in Sidi Moussa.
Five goalkeepers were called up for the current phase of preparations: Alexis Guendouz Zidane, Oussama Benbot, Mastil, Ramdane and Belazzoug.
Competition for places remains intense, with one member of the goalkeeping group expected to leave the camp as the coaching staff finalise their hierarchy ahead of the next stage of preparations. Reports indicate that Belazzoug could be the player to make way.
Meanwhile, the goalkeeper from MC Alger is expected to travel to Kansas City on 7 June as a reserve player for the continuation of preparations.
For now, Mandrea’s presence in Algeria has a simple explanation. While he remains in the country, he is neither involved in training nor part of the current national team plans as Algeria continue their build-up to the 2026 World Cup.
