Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed that Angolan international Clinton Mata has committed his future to the club by signing a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the Groupama Stadium until June 2028.
Olympique Lyonnais is very pleased to announce the extension of Clinton Mata’s contract for two additional seasons, until June 30, 2028, the club said in an official statement.
Mata joined Lyon in the summer of 2023 from Belgian side Club Bruges and quickly became one of the cornerstones of the team.
Over the past two seasons, the 32-year-old defender has featured in 73 matches across all competitions, scoring twice and earning a reputation for consistency and reliability.
While his defensive solidity is widely recognised, Mata’s contribution to the club extends beyond his on-field performances.
Viewed as a mentor to younger players, he has become a respected figure in the dressing room, embodying the standards of discipline and professionalism that Lyon seek to instil in their squad.
Solid on the pitch, valuable off it, Clinton Mata has established himself as a benchmark for the younger players, embodying the values of rigor and high standards expected at this level, the club noted in its announcement.
Lyon also highlighted the strategic importance of keeping the Angolan international, describing him as one of the key elements of the squad over the past two seasons and praising his “experience, reliability, and great versatility. The extension, they said, reflects the club’s commitment to building a balanced squad blending seasoned leaders with emerging talent.
The decision comes during a summer of change for Lyon’s defence, with Croatian centre-back Duje Ćaleta-Car leaving for Real Sociedad and only one new defender brought in.
Mata’s renewal therefore offers a measure of stability at the back and could see him deployed in both his natural full-back role and as a central defender alongside Moussa Niakhaté.
At 32, Mata continues to display the same drive and ambition that have defined his career, and Lyon believe his leadership will be instrumental as they aim to strengthen their position in Ligue 1 and compete in Europe.
For Mata, the extension signals both a personal and professional commitment to a club where he has quickly become an indispensable figure.
For Lyon, it is the continuation of a partnership built on consistency, trust, and shared ambition — one they hope will yield further success in the years ahead.
