Angola triumphed 2-1 over Lesotho in the latest fixture of the AFCON U17 COSAFA Qualifiers, taking top spot in their group. The match saw a dominant first-half performance from Angola, with winger Eliseu Francisco particularly impressive in his dribbling, causing problems for the Lesotho defence.
Francisco broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a poor clearance from Lesotho to give Angola the lead.
Despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities, Angola was unable to extend their advantage before the break.
Lesotho’s coach made a series of substitutions in both halves in an effort to counter Angola’s pressure.
These changes paid off as Lesotho found renewed energy, especially in midfield, allowing them to push further into Angola’s half and threaten the opposition goal.
However, Angola regained control in the 78th minute when towering midfielder Dansel Liyun scored a well-placed header from a corner, doubling Angola’s lead.
But Lesotho responded quickly, with Rethabile Nqoko pulling one back for his side just four minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Angola.
In the final stages of the match, Lesotho pushed for an equalizer, putting Angola under significant pressure.
However, despite their best efforts, Lesotho was unable to find the back of the net again, and Angola held on to secure the three points and top the group.
The AFCON U17 COSAFA Qualifiers continue on Thursday with the opening matches in Groups B and C.
