Former Angola captain Fabrice Alcibiades Maieco, known as Akwa says he is surprised following the omission of Egyptian star Mohammed Salah from the final lists of nominees for the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award.
Salah joined Nicolas Jackson and Mohammed Salah as the notable omission from the final shortlist ahead of the awards this month.
The final lists released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) included Rowen Williams of South Africa, Simon Adingra of Ivory Coast and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi
Other players on the list are Serhou Guirassy of Guinea and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman.
Speaking to Koora, Akwa, who captained Angola during the 2006 AFCON tournament in Egypt expressed shock over the exclusion of Salah from the final list.
“I was very surprised that Salah’s name was not on the list. It was a surprise to me and I don’t know why, but the names that are present and nominated are also great”
Salah scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 appearances across competitions last season.
