Andy Delort engages in talks with Algerian club amid transfer uncertainty
Algerian international Andy Delort, who has been without a club for several months, is reportedly in discussions with MC Alger as he searches for his next career move. The 31-year-old striker has been a free agent since mid-February following the termination of his contract with Qatari side Umm Salal SC, and his unique situation has drawn attention in Algeria.
Delort, known for his goal-scoring prowess, had initially expressed a desire to return to Montpellier, where he enjoyed a successful stint between 2018 and 2021, netting 15 goals during his time with the French club.
However, a significant financial hurdle has complicated this potential reunion. According to DZfoot, any club looking to sign Delort would be required to pay Umm Salal a sum of €2 million, a condition that has stalled negotiations with Montpellier.
With this obstacle in mind, Delort has reportedly shifted his focus to Algeria, where he has attracted the interest of MC Alger, the reigning champions of the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
Nabil Djellit, a journalist with L’Equipe, reports that the club is eager to secure Delort’s services, especially following the departure of star player Youcef Belaïli to Espérance de Tunis earlier this summer.
Delort, who was part of Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, is said to be open to the move.
For MC Alger, the acquisition of Delort would be a significant statement of intent as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
The club is keen to bring in a high-profile player to fill the void left by Belaïli, and Delort’s experience and skillset make him an attractive option.
As Delort continues to weigh his options, his potential move to MC Alger would not only mark a return to his roots but also provide him with an opportunity to reignite his career in a familiar environment.
However, the deal is far from finalized, and both parties will need to navigate the financial complexities involved to make the transfer a reality.
The football community in Algeria is closely watching these developments, eager to see if Delort will indeed join MC Alger and bring his talents to the domestic league.
His decision in the coming days will be crucial in determining the next chapter of his professional journey.
