Reda Belahyane reveals how Gattuso restored his confidence at Lazio
Moroccan midfielder Reda Belahyane has credited Gennaro Gattuso for restoring his confidence and helping him establish himself in Lazio’s starting line-up after struggling for regular playing time under previous managers.
Belahyane discussed his personal improvement, Lazio’s impressive start to the season and the influence of Gattuso during an interview with French newspaper L’Équipe.
Lazio have surprised many observers with their performances this season, having finished ninth in the league last term. The club’s current form has been particularly impressive given the difficulties they faced before the campaign began.
The midfielder admitted that even the players did not expect such a strong start after the disappointment of last season.
“Given last season, nobody would have bet on us,” he told L’Équipe, acknowledging the unexpected progress made by the team.
The situation at the Italian club was complicated by tensions between supporters and the management, alongside a transfer ban that created further uncertainty around their prospects.
At one stage, Lazio were even viewed as potential candidates for a battle against relegation. However, the players have responded positively and are determined to maintain their progress.
“It’s pretty good to prove them wrong. We’re really trying to go there with all our aggression and courage,” Belahyane added.
Gattuso’s influence on Belahyane
Beyond the team’s collective improvement, Belahyane also spoke about the personal impact Gattuso has had on his career.
The Moroccan international endured difficult periods under Marco Baroni and Maurizio Sarri, struggling to secure consistent minutes on the pitch. His lack of involvement gradually affected his confidence and made it difficult for him to perform at his best.
However, the arrival of Gattuso has changed his situation, with the midfielder highlighting the Italian manager’s ability to motivate his players and make everyone feel important within the squad.
“He gave me a lot of confidence. He’s someone who makes you want to fight for him,” he explained.
Belahyane also praised Gattuso’s approach to managing the group, particularly his willingness to involve every member of the squad and maintain a close relationship with his players.
The midfielder admitted that spending extended periods on the bench had taken a toll on his belief in himself.
“After a while, the confidence disappears, you start to doubt yourself,” he said.
He believes Gattuso helped him understand that he deserved a place in the team, allowing him to regain his confidence and show what he could offer.
A new role in Lazio’s midfield
Belahyane has since become a regular in Lazio’s starting line-up, operating in a defensive midfield position where his responsibilities include winning back possession and helping the team launch attacks.
Although the role does not always attract the same attention as more attacking positions, the Moroccan is enjoying the responsibility and the opportunity to contribute to the team’s performances.
Despite his improved standing and Lazio’s encouraging results, the midfielder remains cautious about the season ahead.
With only three months of competition completed, Belahyane is unwilling to get carried away by the team’s progress. He would rather remain focused, continue working hard and allow his performances to demonstrate his development.
