Former Cameroon goalkeeper Carlos Kameni has praised Andre Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor, arguing that the shot-stopper’s decision to sign for the Turkish club was a good one.

Onana joined the Turkish side on a season-long loan following heavy criticism for inconsistent performances at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian played just one cup match for the Red Devils this season before making the switch.

Speaking in an interview with Africafoot, Kameni backed his compatriot’s move, stressing that consistent game time is exactly what Onana needs.

“It’s a good choice. Andre was struggling at Manchester United. Everyone, including him, understood that he would probably spend a lot of time on the bench or in the stands,” he said.

The former Espanyol and Fenerbahçe goalkeeper believes that the Turkish Süper Lig provides the perfect platform for Onana to regain his confidence and prove his quality once more.

At 29, Onana still has the opportunity to reestablish himself as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers and attract major interest next summer.

In his first match with Trabzonspor over the weekend, he starred with eight saves, winning the Man of the Match award in the process.
