André Onana, the Cameroonian goalkeeper for Manchester United, was awarded the Player Impact Award by FIFPRO on Tuesday, recognizing his exceptional humanitarian efforts through the Andre Onana Foundation.
The foundation, which provides high-quality surgeries to children and adults in disadvantaged African communities, was born from Onana’s deep-rooted commitment to giving back to his homeland.
“The Andre Onana Foundation provides high-quality surgeries to children and adults from disadvantaged communities,” the foundation states. FIFPRO has generously donated $10,000 to support its cause.
Reflecting on his journey, Onana shared, “Growing up in Cameroon taught me how important it is to support each other. I got that from my family and the people around me.” He emphasized the importance of community, saying, “When I was having a hard time, they extended a hand so I could get back up. I have never forgotten that help.”
Onana’s mission with the foundation is close to his heart. “When we have the campaigns, I try to be there as much as possible. You see people who have nothing, but still seem happier than people who have everything. When you see that, it changes your way of thinking.”
