Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has addressed criticism surrounding his participation in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), asserting his commitment to representing his country despite facing challenges in his journey to the tournament in the Ivory Coast.
Onana, who recently traveled from Manchester to join the AFCON squad, found himself embroiled in a travel-related predicament, leading to his delayed arrival and subsequent absence from Cameroon’s opener against Guinea.
The goalkeeper had played for Manchester United against Tottenham in the Premier League just a day before embarking on his journey to Africa.
In response to the scrutiny surrounding his circumstances, Onana, in an interview with Canal Plus on Monday night, expressed his determination to rise above criticism, stating, “I have a lot to say but I will not say it here because we are in competition.
Let me continue to be criticized; I am used to it. I do what is good for my country.”
Acknowledging the challenges faced in balancing club commitments and national duty, Onana metaphorically compared the situation to choosing between his father and mother but emphasized that his allegiance lies with his country, asserting, “It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first; that’s why I’m here.
We are together. We are here to win [the tournament].”
This resolute statement from the Manchester United goalkeeper reflects his unwavering dedication to the national cause, underscoring the sacrifices made by players navigating the demanding schedules of both club and international football.
As Cameroon progresses in the AFCON, Onana’s resilience and commitment are poised to be crucial elements in their pursuit of tournament glory.
