André Onana shines in Türkiye as Cameroonian goalkeeper earns top praise

André Onana is enjoying a remarkable resurgence since joining Trabzonspor three months ago, leaving his turbulent Manchester United spell behind.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has delivered a string of commanding performances in the Süper Lig, earning praise from Turkish media and fans alike.

Some now even rate him above Ederson of Fenerbahçe and the Brazilian national team, a comparison that underscores the impressive impact Onana has made.

Zeki Uzundurukan, editor-in-chief of Fotomaç, one of Turkey’s leading sports publications, was unequivocal in his assessment.

André Onana is an absolutely exceptional goalkeeper and, at the moment, the most in-form in the league. In terms of decisive saves, Onana clearly surpasses Uğurcan (Galatasaray) and Ederson (Fenerbahçe), he said.

Onana’s statistics reinforce this assertion.

In ten Süper Lig appearances, he has conceded just eleven goals while making 34 saves from 45 shots on target, yielding an impressive save rate of over 74%.

Crucially, none of his performances have directly led to goals for Trabzonspor, highlighting his reliability and sharp decision-making.

By contrast, Ederson has made eleven saves from 18 shots on target across seven matches, a save rate of around 61%, despite Fenerbahçe facing fewer scoring opportunities.

After two challenging seasons in England, where Onana struggled for consistency and confidence, this revival in Türkiye marks a significant turning point.

His performances demonstrate not only technical skill but also the mental fortitude to rebound from criticism, reinforcing his reputation as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.

Onana has also shown his international calibre, particularly during Cameroon’s 2026 World Cup playoff loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Despite conceding to Jean-Claude Mbemba, he made crucial stops against players such as Cédric Bakambu and Théo Bongonda, reminding observers of his ability to perform under pressure on the international stage.

This return to form could not come at a more critical moment.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco approaching, Cameroon will depend on Onana to provide the security and leadership required for the Indomitable Lions to contend for the continental title.

If he continues this trajectory, the goalkeeper is poised to re-establish himself as a cornerstone for both Trabzonspor and Cameroon, sending a clear message to critics and supporters that his best days are far from behind him.
