André Onana questions Cameroon’s football identity in candid interview

André Onana questions Cameroon's football identity in candid interview

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has expressed concerns over the current state of the Cameroon national team, lamenting the loss of identity and leadership within the Indomitable Lions.

In an interview with Média Carré, the 28-year-old shot-stopper voiced his worries about the team’s evolution, suggesting that the absence of influential figures has affected the squad’s character.

“My country’s national team has lost a lot. We’ve lost leaders. We’ve lost people who created the atmosphere. I think we’re also losing our identity, because there’s a lot of mixing today,” Onana stated.

Without delving into specifics, the former Ajax player highlighted the impact of Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo, whose last international appearance came in 2022.

“At the time, we had players like Oyongo Bitolo, just one like him, he is a gift from God. He is so positive. He is the one that everyone loves. Everyone wants to be with him,” he added.

Onana’s comments appear to underline the importance of unity and positive energy in rebuilding a cohesive team capable of carrying forward the Indomitable Lions’ legacy.

Despite Cameroon remaining unbeaten since their 2023 AFCON campaign, the goalkeeper’s remarks have sparked debate, especially given the team’s recent stability on the pitch.

Reflecting on his international career, Onana dismissed suggestions that his lack of silverware with the national side diminishes his achievements.

“I didn’t win anything with the Lions? Yes, I did. Wearing the jersey of my country’s national team is a victory. My dream was to wear this jersey. From that moment on, it’s an exceptional victory,” he asserted.

However, Onana’s own conduct has not been without controversy. His delayed arrival at the recent AFCON tournament in order to prioritise club commitments drew criticism, exacerbating tensions with Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o.

Looking ahead, Onana remains optimistic about Cameroon’s prospects, refusing to adopt an underdog mentality for future tournaments.

“Cameroon is one of the favourites. We must assume this leadership status. We are a very beautiful nation. Our elders have done great things in the past. We must try to follow in their footsteps,” he said.

While acknowledging the quality of other teams, he maintained a defiant stance.

“At the AFCON, there are great nations, but Cameroon will have its say. I, André Onana, the Manchester United goalkeeper, I will not be afraid… with all the respect I have for the others.”

Onana concluded with a rallying call for unity within the squad.

“We have to work well, we have to be undisturbed, we have to live well together. We can’t put everything on the Hemle (the warrior mindset).”

His forthright statements have sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding his candour while others question the timing and appropriateness of his comments.
