André Onana not among AS Monaco’s transfer targets, confirms report
Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana is not part of AS Monaco’s recruitment plans for the upcoming season, according to recent reports that seek to clarify growing speculation over the Cameroonian international’s future.
Despite a turbulent first year at Old Trafford, Onana’s name has featured in multiple transfer rumours in recent weeks, with some linking him to a move to Ligue 1.
However, renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano has dismissed suggestions of interest from AS Monaco, stating unequivocally that the French club is not targeting the 28-year-old shot-stopper.
Monaco, who are active in the transfer market following the high-profile acquisition of Paul Pogba and the expected arrival of Barcelona’s Ansu Fati, are indeed seeking to strengthen their squad in key areas.
Yet, the goalkeeping position is not believed to be among their current priorities, and Onana is not under consideration as part of their summer strategy.
The clarification comes amid mounting speculation over Onana’s future in England. The former Inter Milan and Ajax keeper joined Manchester United in July 2023 for a reported fee of around £47 million, brought in as a replacement for long-time number one David de Gea.
Expectations were high, particularly given his reputation for ball-playing ability and his standout campaign with Inter in the Champions League the previous year.
However, Onana endured an inconsistent debut season in the Premier League. Across 50 appearances in all competitions, he conceded 65 goals and managed 11 clean sheets — statistics that, while not disastrous, have failed to dispel doubts about his long-term suitability at United.
His performances drew mixed reactions from fans and pundits alike, as questions emerged about his command in the box and shot-stopping under pressure.
Despite the uncertainties, Onana remains under contract at Manchester United until June 2028. Transfermarkt currently estimates his market value at €25 million, a figure that reflects both his potential and the dip in form that has marked his first season in English football.
As things stand, there appears to be no concrete interest from any of Europe’s top clubs. While it is not unusual for high-profile players to be linked to various destinations during the transfer window, many of the Onana-related rumours appear to be speculative rather than based on genuine negotiations.
AS Monaco’s position is particularly significant given the credibility it brings to the ongoing narrative. With the club reportedly focused on reinforcing other areas of the squad, the dismissal of any pursuit of Onana helps clarify one of the more persistent storylines circulating in the media.
Onana’s immediate future, then, remains tied to Manchester United. Whether he will continue as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper heading into next season remains to be seen, particularly as United face pressure to improve following an underwhelming campaign. However, for now, speculation linking him to a move to Monaco can be firmly ruled out.
