André Onana’s turbulent tenure at Manchester United has come under fresh scrutiny after former Inter Milan goalkeeper Alberto Fontana launched a scathing critique of the Cameroonian’s performances, questioning his value and place at the Premier League club.
Onana, who left Inter Milan in 2023 after guiding them to the Champions League final, has faced persistent criticism since his high-profile move to Old Trafford.
While his time in Italy was marked by stellar performances and impressive statistics, his form in England has sparked debates over his consistency and suitability for Manchester United.
Fontana, who played for Inter between 2001 and 2005, didn’t hold back in his assessment, labeling Onana’s style as overly theatrical and ineffective.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said, “We don’t try to impress people with special effects. I couldn’t stand Onana precisely because of all that smoke, all those somersaults.”
Fontana went further, questioning the logic behind Manchester United’s €50 million investment.
“I know when you want to make easy saves look difficult. I don’t understand how Onana is at this level.
€50 million? I wouldn’t even want him as a gift. Well done to Inter, and I don’t think United are thrilled with what they got.”
The criticism underscores the widening gap between Onana’s past success with Inter Milan and his current struggles at Manchester United.
During his time in Italy, the Cameroonian established himself as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, securing 18 clean sheets in 41 appearances and maintaining a remarkable goals-conceded ratio of just 0.82 per game.
His performances were pivotal in Inter’s journey to the 2023 Champions League final, where his composure and shot-stopping earned widespread praise.
However, the move to the Premier League has proven more challenging. Since joining Manchester United, Onana has conceded 126 goals in 82 appearances, with his clean sheet tally dropping to 21.
His goals-conceded ratio has significantly increased, leading to mounting pressure from fans and pundits alike.
While some attribute his struggles to the Premier League’s fast-paced, physical style and the defensive inconsistencies within Manchester United’s backline, Fontana’s remarks reflect a growing impatience among critics.
The Red Devils’ fluctuating form has only heightened the scrutiny on Onana, whose high-profile mistakes have often made headlines.
Despite the mounting criticism, Onana has remained focused, insisting that he is committed to improving his performances at Old Trafford.
Speaking after a recent match, he acknowledged the challenges but emphasized his determination to succeed.
“Every club has its own demands, and I am working hard to meet Manchester United’s expectations.
It hasn’t been easy, but I’m here to fight for my place and help the team.”
Nevertheless, with Fontana’s biting comments adding fuel to the ongoing debate about his future, Onana’s role at Manchester United could face further uncertainty if results don’t improve.
The Red Devils, already battling for consistency this season, may soon be forced to make difficult decisions regarding their goalkeeping situation.
As Manchester United’s campaign reaches a critical phase, all eyes will remain on Onana, whose ability to silence his critics could determine both his future at Old Trafford and the club’s prospects this season.
50 milioni? Ma neanche… pic.twitter.com/ZnflBqxM0C
