Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has revealed the impact AC Milan’s Mike Maignan had on his development during his time in Italy.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper acknowledged that Maignan’s performances set a benchmark for him at Inter Milan, driving him to improve and establish himself as a top goalkeeper.
Maignan’s influence in Serie A
Speaking to Carre, Onana described Maignan as a player he greatly admires.
He is a very talented goalkeeper and a great person, who I really like,” Onana said. The two goalkeepers frequently crossed paths in Italy, competing not only in Serie A but also on the European stage in the Champions League.
The rivalry between Inter and Milan intensified the competition between them, with Onana using Maignan’s performances as motivation.
We had heard of each other, and I always thought, ‘There is real competition here,’” he explained. “If he made a good pass, I had to show that I could do better.
If he made a great save, I had to prove my superiority.
Adapting to life at Inter Milan
Onana reflected on his arrival at Inter Milan, where he initially had to fight for a starting role.
At the time, Maignan had just led AC Milan to the Serie A title, cementing his status as the best goalkeeper in Italy.
Meanwhile, Onana had to contend with Inter’s veteran keeper, Samir Handanović.
When I arrived, Simone Inzaghi told me that Handanović would be the starter,” Onana recalled.
Despite initially being second choice, he remained determined to prove himself.
Rivalry that fueled improvement
Onana’s desire to surpass Maignan was a major source of motivation.
The high standards set by the French international forced Onana to raise his game, pushing him to become a crucial player for Inter Milan.
His efforts paid off, as he eventually claimed the number-one spot and played a key role in Inter’s run to the Champions League final.
Now at Manchester United, Onana continues to build on the lessons learned during his time in Italy.
His journey from competing with Maignan in Serie A to becoming the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford highlights his resilience and ambition.
As both goalkeepers continue to shine at the highest level, their mutual respect remains evident, demonstrating how competition can bring out the best in elite players.
