André Onana has made it clear he has no intention of leaving Manchester United, despite speculation surrounding his future.
The 28-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2023 from Inter Milan for €55 million, is determined to establish himself as the club’s long-term No.1.
However, with Manchester United reportedly considering a goalkeeping reinforcement, his position is far from secure.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping overhaul
According to the Manchester Evening News, Rúben Amorim’s appointment as United’s manager could mark a shift in how the club approaches the goalkeeping position.
While Onana remains under contract until 2028, the club is actively assessing its options, particularly given the uncertain futures of backup keepers Tom Heaton and Altay Bayındır.
Heaton’s contract expires in June, and the veteran shot-stopper is rumored to be considering retirement.
Meanwhile, Bayındır, who has struggled for playing time, could seek an exit in search of regular football.
With these departures a possibility, United’s hierarchy is reportedly looking at bringing in another goalkeeper, putting further pressure on Onana.
Mistakes raising doubts about Onana’s reliability
Onana’s debut season in the Premier League has been marked by high-profile errors, leading to growing concerns about his consistency.
He has already committed three costly mistakes that directly resulted in goals, notably against Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and Brighton.
Given United’s struggles this season, some analysts believe the club might consider selling Onana to cut their losses and free up funds for other reinforcements.
However, any sale would require the club to recoup at least €32.7 million to comply with Premier League financial regulations.
AFCON 2025: A key consideration for United
Another complicating factor is Onana’s potential involvement in AFCON 2025, which is set to take place between December 18, 2025, and January 2026.
If he is selected for Cameroon, Manchester United could be without their first-choice goalkeeper at a crucial stage of the season.
With injuries already affecting the squad’s depth, the club is likely to plan for a reliable alternative to cover for his potential absence.
Onana remains determined to prove himself
Despite speculation and criticism, Onana remains fully committed to Manchester United.
He is eager to prove he can be the dependable last line of defence that the team needs.
His ability to play out from the back and his Champions League experience remain valuable assets.
However, with a new manager coming in and the club exploring other options, he must regain the trust of both fans and coaching staff to cement his place at Old Trafford.
