Marseille Demolish Reims 5-0, Ayew Shines with a Brace
Reims endured a crushing 5-0 loss to Olympique de Marseille on Tuesday during the 7th round of Ligue 1, in a match that turned into a nightmare for the Champagne club at the Stade Auguste Delaune.
The team was completely overrun, and both Reims goalkeepers were called into action — Johny Placide started the match and conceded two goals before being replaced at halftime by Kossi Agassa, who let in three more.
The standout performer of the night was André Ayew, the Ghanaian international, who netted two goals, including one where he reacted quickly to a loose ball after a Thauvin shot parried by Agassa, coolly finishing the chance. Some confusion may have arisen about a “hat trick,” but official records credit Ayew with two goals in this match.
André-Pierre Gignac also grabbed a brace, continuing his strong form, while Giannelli Imbula capped the scoring with a powerful long-range effort.
With this emphatic victory, Marseille continued their dominant run in Ligue 1, climbing to the top of the table. In contrast, Reims, sitting just above the relegation zone, will need to regroup quickly before their next match against Metz.
