AmaZulu coach Zwane tips Ngwenya to follow in Musona’s footsteps

AmaZulu FC coach Arthur Zwane believes Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has the ability to develop into a striker capable of reaching the level achieved by former Kaizer Chiefs forward Knowledge Musona.

Ngwenya has made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign, scoring five goals and supplying one assist in four appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old Zimbabwean joined AmaZulu FC from FC Platinum at the beginning of last season. Since moving to the KZN club, he has established himself as a regular member of the team.

Zwane has been encouraged by Ngwenya’s determination in front of goal and believes the forward still has considerable room for improvement. The coach says he intends to continue mentoring and challenging him as he seeks to fulfil his potential.

“When you have a player like him that shows hunger…he’s still young, but he’s going to get to the level of the Musonas,” said Zwane.

The AmaZulu FC coach also compared the potential status Ngwenya could achieve in Zimbabwe with that of some of the country’s best-known footballers.

“I’m his mentor, I’m his coach, I’m going to push him to that level. I want Thando when he goes to Zimbabwe, he should be treated like a Musona, like Billiat, like a Peter Ndlovu because he’s got that potential as a striker, he can score, he’s got goals in him.

“He’s not yet at his best right now because that injury took him out for a very long time and he came back, a little bit sluggish, but because he has goals in him, he’s a sniper, you know, so we’ll work on him.”

Zwane’s comments come as Ngwenya enjoys a productive spell at the beginning of the new season. His five goals in four appearances have given him an important early contribution for AmaZulu FC, while his assist has further underlined his attacking influence.

Despite that strong return, Zwane believes the striker has not yet reached his highest level. The coach pointed to the significant injury that kept Ngwenya out for a long period and said the player was initially sluggish after returning to action.

However, Zwane remains confident that Ngwenya’s natural goalscoring ability can help him progress. He described the forward as a “sniper” and stressed that further work will be done to develop him.

Musona is a former Kaizer Chiefs star and fellow Zimbabwean, while Zwane also referenced Khama Billiat and Peter Ndlovu as examples of the standing Ngwenya could potentially achieve in his home country.
