Bayern Munich begin Champions League campaign with emphatic 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt

Bayern Munich opened their Champions League campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Bodo/Glimt as Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise helped Vincent Kompany’s side pull away after a goalless first half.

Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin kept Bayern at bay before the interval, producing important saves to deny Luis Diaz and Harry Kane before also stopping efforts from Joshua Kimmich and Musiala.

Khaikin was replaced at half-time after appearing to injure himself while making a save, and Bayern needed only 77 seconds of the second half to take advantage.

Kane’s effort was blocked into the path of Musiala, who finished into the far corner to put the German champions ahead.

“I’m very happy to have scored, happy to be back in the starting lineup in the Champions League,” Musiala told DAZN.

“I’m getting my rhythm back. The team really supported me, the coach, my teammates, they were a big help.

“I want to perform – and step by step, have fun again and get back to my best.”

Kane doubled the lead when he met Olise’s free-kick with a powerful header that flew beyond replacement goalkeeper Julian Faye Lund. The goal was the England captain’s first in Europe this season.

Bodo/Glimt came close to an immediate response when Andreas Helmersen noticed Manuel Neuer had moved off his line, but his long-range attempt went narrowly over the crossbar.

Bayern continued to control the match and extended their advantage in the 77th minute. Alphonso Davies collected the ball after a partially cleared corner and drove a fierce shot through a crowded penalty area and into the net.

Olise made it 4-0 with an outstanding curling finish into the top corner before Bodo/Glimt’s prospects worsened further.

Odin Bjortuft was shown a red card for fouling Olise just outside the penalty area. With Bayern enjoying an extra man, Olise scored again in stoppage time to complete the rout.

Kane praised Bayern’s composure after their first-half frustration.

“I’m really happy with the result. We had to be patient tonight,” the England captain said.

“I thought we were also better in the first half, their goalkeeper made some good saves. We stayed calm and kept knocking on the door.

“The early goal helped us. We showed last season that we get even stronger as the game advances.

“We wanted to put in a good performance and get the three points in front of our fans. I’m happy we did that.”

The result means Bayern have won their opening Champions League match for a 24th consecutive season.

Kompany’s team remain unbeaten in all competitions this season and made a strong return to Europe’s elite competition.

Their attention now turns to the Bundesliga, with newly promoted SV Elversberg visiting on Sunday.
