Amad Diallo echoes Didier Drogba with ‘fucking disgrace’ message after Manchester United defeat

Amad Diallo has revived one of Didier Drogba’s most famous football outbursts after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The Ivory Coast winger posted a short but strongly worded message on Snapchat after Tuesday’s loss: “Fucking disgrace, I have no words.”

There is no evidence that Diallo was deliberately referring to his illustrious compatriot. However, his wording closely resembled the phrase Drogba used after Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in 2009.

Manchester United fell behind after only 53 seconds when Pablo Barrios opened the scoring. Their task became even harder when Leny Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute, before Ademola Lookman added Atletico Madrid’s second goal five minutes later.

Diallo came on in the 66th minute but was unable to change the course of a match that extended Manchester United’s winless run to five games.

His post did not appear to be aimed at the officials. Unlike Drogba’s reaction in 2009, Diallo’s comments seemed primarily to reflect his frustration with Manchester United’s collective performance.

The result was particularly disappointing for Diallo, who has taken on a greater role in recent months and become, alongside Yan Diomande, one of Cote d’Ivoire’s main attacking threats.

Drogba’s infamous Chelsea outburst

On 6 May 2009, Drogba delivered an almost identical verdict after Chelsea were eliminated by FC Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.

The striker was furious with referee Tom Henning Øvrebø, whom Chelsea accused of making several controversial decisions in the penalty area. After the final whistle, Drogba faced a camera and said: “It’s a fucking disgrace!”

The incident became one of the best-known moments of Drogba’s career. He was subsequently given a six-match European suspension, with two of those matches suspended.

The circumstances and consequences of the two incidents were therefore very different. Drogba reacted immediately after a European elimination he believed had been influenced by refereeing decisions.

Diallo, by contrast, expressed his frustration later on social media after another difficult night for Manchester United. Nevertheless, 17 years on, the same expression of anger has resurfaced in the words of another Ivory Coast international.
