Sam Allardyce hits out at Mohamed Salah over Liverpool comments
Former Everton and Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has strongly criticised Mohamed Salah following the Liverpool star’s recent public comments, insisting no player should consider himself bigger than the club.
Salah is expected to make his final appearance for Liverpool next Sunday when the Reds host Brentford, potentially bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield.
Salah’s Comments Spark Debate
The Egyptian forward recently reignited controversy after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa by posting a message on social media that many interpreted as criticism of manager Arne Slot’s tactical style.
In the post, Salah appeared to express nostalgia for the high-intensity football Liverpool played under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
The comments came months after the 33-year-old suggested he had been turned into a “scapegoat” by certain figures within the club, further increasing tensions surrounding his situation.
Salah’s performances this season have also come under scrutiny after losing his regular starting place under Slot.
Allardyce Delivers Strong Response
Speaking on the “No Tippy Tappy Football” podcast, Allardyce questioned Salah’s decision to make his frustrations public while still representing Liverpool.
“If Mohamed Salah wants to say things like that, then he should say them after he’s gone. You can’t say that while you’re still at the club and act like you’re bigger than Liverpool.”
The former Premier League manager also claimed Liverpool’s hierarchy should have stepped in.
“If I were one of Liverpool’s owners, I would have stopped him. I would have told him: Who do you think you are? You are not bigger than this club.”
Former Manager Questions Salah’s Form
Allardyce also revisited earlier tensions involving Salah and suggested the winger had failed to take responsibility for his performances this season.
“This brought back the controversy he created at the beginning of the season, and since then his level has also been poor. Considering what he was like before, he has not delivered what was expected of him this season.”
He continued by saying Salah should focus more on his own performances rather than airing disagreements publicly.
“Salah needs to look at himself and how bad his level has been this year. Players and coaches may disagree behind closed doors, but it should never become public. If Salah had done that in Sir Alex Ferguson’s days, he would never have played again.”
Liverpool Close to Champions League Spot
Despite recent criticism surrounding the club, Liverpool remain on the verge of securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Bournemouth’s draw against Manchester City on Tuesday left the Reds in a strong position to finish inside the Premier League’s top five places.
Salah has also faced criticism from several former players in recent days, including Jamie Carragher, Wayne Rooney, and John Arne Riise, who have all questioned the timing and nature of his comments.
