Kenya’s Michael Olunga unlikely to feature in opening AFCON qualifiers

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga appeared to respond to sustained criticism after Kenya’s humiliating 8-0 loss to Senegal, a match he did not feature in.

The striker was among several senior players omitted from the November friendlies as Benni McCarthy assessed alternative options during the international window.

His absence meant he avoided the scrutiny that followed the 1-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea on Friday and the capitulation against Senegal on Tuesday.

Olunga has faced intense criticism during recent national team outings, with some supporters questioning his continued inclusion.

The backlash has grown in recent months, and his online activity after Tuesday’s defeat drew significant attention.

Moments after the match, Olunga shared a picture of himself on a desert safari via his Facebook story.

The post included Bien’s song All My Enemies Are Suffering, which many interpreted as a pointed reaction to comments surrounding his Harambee Stars performances.

He later added another story captioned “First Class”, paired with Jack Harlow’s track First Class. Both posts were widely circulated and fuelled debate over whether the captain was commenting on Kenya’s struggles or responding to critics.

Kenya endured a disastrous opening phase in Antalya, conceding four goals inside the first 17 minutes.

Nicolas Jackson struck twice, with El Hadji Malick Diouf also on the scoresheet, before Sadio Mane completed a first-half hat-trick. Senegal entered halftime with a dominant 6-0 lead, exposing weaknesses across the Kenyan setup.

The second half brought two more goals, as Ibrahim Mbaye and Cherif Ndiaye completed the rout. The defeat was Kenya’s second heaviest in history, coming close to the 13-1 loss against Ghana in 1965. The result has intensified scrutiny on the team’s structure and the ongoing experimentation with new players.
