The Egyptian Super Cup 2023 kicks off in its new format today, Monday, in the United Arab Emirates with the participation of Al-Ahly, Future, Pyramids, and Ceramica Cleopatra.
Future will play against Pyramids in the first semi-final, while Al-Ahly will face Ceramica Cleopatra in the second. The winner of each match will compete for the Egyptian Super Cup in the final.
Looking back at the history of the Egyptian Super Cup, we find that only a quartet of foreign players have managed to score and find the net, and ironically, all of them belong to Al-Ahly.
Walid Azaro was the first foreign player to score in the Super Cup, leading Al-Ahly to the title early in 2018 with a memorable goal against Al Masry.
Junior Ajayi is the only foreign player to score two goals in the Egyptian Super Cup, shining in the summit clash between Al-Ahly and Zamalek in September 2019, scoring twice in the Red Devils’ triumph at the Borg El Arab Stadium.
The third among the registered foreigners is the Brazilian Bruno Henrique in the Emirates summit between the arch-rivals Al-Ahly and Zamalek, opening the team’s scoring in October 2022.
Tunisian Ali Maaloul signed the fourth goal for foreigners in the history of the Egyptian Super Cup with a penalty kick against Pyramids in the last edition, leading Al-Ahly to a new title.
This quartet of foreign players has etched their names into the annals of the Egyptian Super Cup, showcasing their talent and contributing to Al-Ahly’s success in the prestigious tournament.
