Newly appointed Libya coach Aliou Cissé has vowed to restore the country’s footballing reputation while laying out his expectations for success.
Libya has endured a prolonged absence from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), having last qualified in 2012.
Determined to end this 12-year drought, the nation has turned to Cissé, who famously guided Senegal to the 2021 AFCON title, in hopes of reviving their fortunes.
Cissé’s Bold Promise
Speaking at his official unveiling in Tripoli, Cissé expressed both his excitement for the challenge and his determination to build a competitive team.
“I am honored to be here in Libya and excited to take on this challenge,” he said. “The Libyan national team has talented players, and with the right approach, we can build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.”
Libya’s most recent major success came in 2014 when they won the African Nations Championship (CHAN), but their performances in continental competitions have since declined.
Cissé is keen to change that narrative by instilling a higher level of professionalism and ambition within the squad.
A Clear Vision for Progress
The former Senegal coach outlined his strategy for transforming Libya into a formidable force.
“Through cooperation and hard work, we can take the national team to new heights. The Libyan league has excellent players, and we will also look for international professionals to strengthen the squad,” he stated.
Cissé is expected to introduce a modern tactical approach, focusing on discipline, organization, and identifying the best talents both domestically and abroad to reinforce the team.
His Key Demands
Cissé made it clear that support from all corners of Libyan football will be essential to achieving success.
“The backing of the Libyan media and fans will be crucial. If we work together, we can accomplish something special,” he urged.
The 48-year-old coach will have little time to settle in, as Libya faces two crucial fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Currently second in Group D with seven points—just one behind leaders Cameroon—Libya will host Angola in Benghazi on March 20 before traveling to Yaoundé for a decisive encounter against the Indomitable Lions on March 25.
With Cissé at the helm, Libya hopes to turn a new page and take a significant step toward qualifying for their first World Cup.
