Former Senegal national team coach Aliou Cissé is reportedly in advanced discussions to take charge of the Libyan national team, according to reports from both Libyan and Senegalese media.
Cissé, who parted ways with Senegal following their early exit from the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, is said to be a top candidate to lead the Knights of the Mediterranean as they seek to revive their fortunes on the international stage.
Libya last qualified for the AFCON in 2012 and has struggled to make an impact in continental competitions in recent years.
While no official confirmation has been made, the potential appointment has sparked debate among football analysts.
During a discussion on Dsport, Senegalese football experts Yoro Mangara, Thierno Seydi, and Mbaye Diouf Dia weighed in on the possibility of Cissé accepting the Libyan job.
Mangara expressed concerns about the move, suggesting it could be a setback for Cissé’s coaching career. “Going from coaching Senegal to managing a team that hasn’t qualified for the AFCON in over a decade is risky. It could tarnish his professional image,” Mangara remarked.
He drew parallels to former Senegal coach Amara Traoré, who struggled to secure prominent roles after leaving the national team.
“We’ve seen this before. Traoré’s career trajectory changed drastically, and I fear Cissé might face the same fate,” Mangara added.
Despite the reservations, Cissé’s experience in leading Senegal to their maiden AFCON title in 2022 and his long-standing reputation as a tactician make him a compelling candidate for Libya, who are eager to rebuild under new leadership.
The decision could mark a pivotal moment in Cissé’s career, as he contemplates a fresh challenge after nearly nine years at the helm of the Teranga Lions.
The Libyan Football Federation is expected to make an official announcement in the coming days.
