Libya coach Aliou Cissé awaits salary amid federation funding crisis
Aliou Cissé has not been paid for eight months, raising fresh uncertainty over his future as head coach of Libya’s national team.
The Senegalese manager, appointed in 2025 after guiding his country to their first Africa Cup of Nations title, remains under contract until 2027.
However, the prolonged delay in salary payments has cast doubt over whether he will continue in the role.
The president of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdulmola Al-Maghribi, confirmed the financial difficulties affecting the coaching staff.
In comments reported by Wiw Sport, he said: “the Football Federation subsequently delayed the payment of salaries for the Libyan national team coach and his assistant technical staff for eight months due to a lack of funds.”
The admission publicly acknowledges a situation that has been unfolding behind the scenes for several months.
According to Al-Maghribi, the federation has managed to resolve the case of one assistant coach after he filed a complaint and threatened legal action.
Cissé’s tenure began with expectations of building a competitive Libyan side capable of progressing on the continental stage.
His arrival followed a celebrated spell with Senegal, where he secured a historic African title. Yet administrative and financial instability now threatens to overshadow that project.
Libya are preparing for upcoming international fixtures against Niger and Benin during the current break. Whether Cissé will still be in charge for those matches remains unclear.
The uncertainty surrounding his position adds another layer of pressure ahead of crucial games.
With no indication yet that the salary issue has been fully resolved, questions persist about the sustainability of the current arrangement.
For now, Cissé remains officially in post, but the financial impasse has intensified speculation about his future and the direction of Libyan football in the months ahead.
