Alieu Njie: England and The Gambia right-back joins Walthamstow on a free transfer
England and The Gambia right-back Alieu Njie has joined Walthamstow on a free transfer from Canvey Island, returning to the club after completing his move on 14 August 2026.
Njie, 28, plays primarily at right-back and is right-footed. Born in London, the 1.83m defender began the 2026-27 campaign with Canvey Island after leaving Cambridge City earlier in the summer, also on a free transfer.
His move to Walthamstow marks a return to familiar surroundings. Njie previously played for the club after joining from Potters Bar on 27 February 2024, before moving to Cambridge City on 30 July 2025. He spent the 2025-26 season with Cambridge City and then switched to Canvey Island on 1 July 2026.
Njie’s senior career has included spells with several English clubs. Before his first move to Walthamstow, he represented Potters Bar, having joined from Welwyn Garden City in March 2023. He had previously played for Welwyn Garden City after leaving Wingate FC in July 2022.
The defender’s earlier career also included spells with Wingate FC and Heybridge Swifts, while he joined Lewes from Blackpool Under-18s in August 2016. He later moved from Lewes to Heybridge Swifts during the 2016-17 season and subsequently returned to the club before joining Wealdstone.
Njie was without a club for periods in late 2018 and early 2019 before joining Wingate FC in January 2019. His latest move brings him back to Walthamstow following a sequence of free transfers across the English non-league game.
Walthamstow have therefore secured the services of the experienced right-back without a transfer fee, with Njie now registered as a member of the club’s squad.
